Planning Your Maternity Session
Timing
The ideal time for a maternity shoot is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this period, you’ve got the pregnancy glow! The belly is nicely rounded, you’re past the awkward “Are they pregnant?” phase, and you’re feeling energized! Past that and you’re getting into the can’t bend down or squat and just don’t want to do much of anything time.
Wardrobe
Choose outfits that make you feel beautiful and are also comfortable. Empire waist dresses, A-Line dresses, wrap dresses, and Maxi dresses are super flattering and popular choices. A simple fitted t-shirt with a cardigan and leggings is a great choice for laid back Mamas and in-home newborn sessions. Neutral color palates are timeless and photograph really well.
I love, love, love Baltic Born! They have an amazing bump friendly selections that are super flattering and fit amazing. They are also budget friendly too.
Location
First, decide whether you prefer an indoor studio session or an outdoor location or both!. Outdoor locations can provide beautiful natural and scenic backdrops, while studio sessions can offer more controlled lighting and comfort from potential bad weather.
Photographers will have a list of locations they are familiar with. Many like to choose a place that has significant meaning to their family. It makes the experience and photos that much more special.
Posing
Comfort and Safety: Ensure poses are comfortable and safe, especially as mobility may be limited. Discuss any concerns with the photographer ahead of time.
Variety: Consider a variety of poses, including solo shots, partner poses, and incorporating any older siblings or pets.
Personalization:
Incorporate Personal Items: Bring items that are special to you, such as ultrasound images, baby shoes, or letters. These can add a personal touch to the photos.
Theme or Style: Decide if you want a particular theme or style for your shoot, whether it’s whimsical, elegant, or casual.
Preparation
Hair and Makeup: Consider professional hair and makeup. Have a little pampering moment before your session, you deserve it! Opt for a natural and timeless look with matte finishes. Avoid shimmer and glitter as they don’t always photograph well.
Rest and Hydration: Make sure you’re well-rested and hydrated before the shoot to look and feel your best. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to eat before or bring along a snack just in case!
Communication with Photographer
Discuss Expectations: Have a conversation with your photographer about your vision, preferences, and any specific shots you want and communicate any concerns you have about the session so the photographer can accommodate your needs.
Relax and Enjoy
Stay Relaxed: The more comfortable you are, the more natural and beautiful the photos will be. Trust your photographer to guide you through the session.
Lastly, have fun! Enjoy the experience and the opportunity to capture this special time in your life.
