Outdoor Photo Locations in Abilene

Here are a few outdoor options that I am most familiar with. My favorites are the last two options. None of them are terribly difficult to walk through so go with the location that you like the looks of! I recommend session time to start at least 15 minutes before the “golden hour” of the sunsetting. That will give us the best light and colors and give us time to get all of the family groupings photographed.

*If you would prefer to have a traditional indoor studio look I have a couple studios in town that I can get access to, if available.

**Lighting may vary depending on cloud cover.

1. ACU Campus

Pros

  • Multiple distinct photo areas in one location

  • Mix of architecture and greenery

  • Paved walkways and sidewalks throughout campus

  • Several benches and seating areas available

  • Ability to drive between locations to reduce walking

  • Works well for larger groups needing variety

  • Close to home

Cons

  • Some walking is required between spots

  • Using multiple campus locations increases session time

  • Parking and short transitions may be needed

  • Potentially tired of looking at ACU.

Session considerations

  • Best when variety is a priority

Recommended session length: 2 hours if visiting multiple campus areas

2. Buffalo Gap Trade Days Field

Pros

  • Scenic mountain views

  • Combination of wooded shade and open field

  • Natural, rural setting

  • Two access points offering different lighting options

Cons

  • Located approximately 15 minutes outside of town

  • Some uneven terrain throughout the field

  • No seating available

  • Requires close-toed shoes: Lots of pokey things! Baby mesquite trees and goat head stickers in the field.

Access notes

Two points of access available

  • Buffalo Gap Church of Christ side: slightly longer walk, better open shade

  • Trade Days side: shorter walking distance, open sun in the field so sun will be in eyes if you want the hilly view.

3. Kirby Lake Creek Park

Pros

  • Boardwalk-style decking and maintained nature trail

  • Most accessible option for elderly family members

  • Flat, stable walking surfaces

  • Short walking distances between photo areas

  • Option to drive or walk to additional lake views

  • Minimal elevation changes

  • Has a seating area at the beginning of the trail.

Cons

  • Less architectural variety, more natural, wooded look throughout

  • Limited open-field backdrops compared to other locations

Session considerations

  • Best for groups prioritizing ease of movement and accessibility
